As lawyers we likely never learned many of the critical skills we will need if we decide to open our own firms. We probably never went to business school, learned how to manage people, or how to provide excellent customer service -- and yet we may find ourselves at the helm of one of the most complicated small businesses to run. Written by law practice management expert and successful immigration law firm leader Ruby Powers, Build and Manage Your Successful Immigration Law Practice (Without Losing Your Mind) provides immigration attorneys with an on-point practical guide to both starting and then growing an immigration law firm, complete with all the tips and tricks the author has learned over her 10 years as a law firm owner and manager. This book is a comprehensive guide for the practitioner-turned-businessowner who wants to hit the ground running or take his or her firm to the next level.

Even a single piece of advice contained in Build and Manage Your Successful Immigration Law Practice (Without Losing Your Mind) will save anyone running an immigration law practice countless hours of frustration and lead to greater efficiencies—and this book is full of them. You will get the benefit of Ruby Powers’ hard-earned wisdom as she shares:

  • The importance of goal-setting and having a vision and plan for your firm
  • How to juggle your managerial focus, your long-term business planning, and your legal skills development
  • Best practices in hiring, managing, and firing employees and contractors
  • Ways to build self-care and awareness of burnout and compassion fatigue into your day-to-day life
  • How to best organize your day and week, and how to set goals for optimal productivity and momentum
  • How to manage a budget and avoid “bank-balance accounting”
  • Best practices for keeping you and your team updated with the latest changes in immigration law
    And much more

Whether you are a new law firm owner or about to take that leap, Build and Manage Your Successful Immigration Law Practice (Without Losing Your Mind) will give you the assurance that you have considered all aspects of running a law firm and won’t make costly mistakes—or lose your mind—in the process.

"I'm an Immigration lawyer with a lot of experience in marketing online as well as building my own brand. I was excited to learn new ideas from Ruby's book. This iteration does not disappoint. This is an excellent resource for Immigration Lawyers new or experienced, or for anyone else who wishes to build, deepen, or support ongoing beneficial business relationships.

As with so many business and marketing books, it's an easy read, and much harder to implement. I suggest taking it step by step, and implementing at a slow and steady pace. Because this stuff really works. The checklist format and templates help avoid some of the "analysis paralysis" that can come with this territory, so just get started!

Definitely a must read for any immigration attorney seeking to understand the best approach to marketing and growing a practice. Ruby Powers is the gold standard in legal marketing and this book is yet another example of her expertise.
-Jacob J. Sapochnick, LL.M, Attorney

It’s about time this book was written. In 18 different subtopics, Ruby Powers covers everything needed to run a law firm, including finally answering the question of which is the best case management software to purchase! Kidding on that last one. As the book makes evident, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to most questions, but this book does better than any I’ve read to point out how most of these questions are best answered by tying everything back to the vision and mission for the type of office desired. Saving readers a ton of research time, Ruby pulls together the wisdom gleaned from several of the most influential books on management, marketing, customer service, entrepreneurship, process efficiencies, etc. The book is both a detailed map for a lawyer opening an office for the first time AND a go-to resource for owners or partners looking to change or improve a specific aspect of their firm or office, including the option of delving further into particulars with mention of the books influencing each topic. (I jotted down two other books I want to read for areas that are my greatest weakness.) Ruby offers the opportunity for self/firm-reflection at the end of each chapter, if interested – and clearly marked subtitles for those preferring to skip to the meat of a certain topic of interest. I cannot think of an area of law practice management in the life of a firm that is not covered. Much appreciated.
-Melody Poole, Poole Law Center

It is aimed at any law practitioner seeking business-savvy ideas on building and growing a successful law firm. I found essential the chapters covering legal marketing, technology and automation, employee recruitment and staffing. In her book, Ruby Powers shares many valuable tips and reveals insider secrets on building a legal powerhouse.
