Effective Dates: Mandatory Detention, JRAD, and Suspension of Deportation (.PDF)
Many provisions in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) have different effective dates (i.e., the date on which the law became operative, or effective), and applicability date (specifying the events or individuals to which the new provisions apply). Complicating matters, these are often not found in the INA itself, but in the enacting or amending legislation. This practice pointer provides a summary of useful INA provisions with their legislative histories, effective and applicability dates, and citations to the sources of law.
