"Your First" Series, Part I: The One-Step Marriage InterviewThis 90 minute web seminar was presented live on July 30, 2013, from 2:00 pm-3:30 pm eastern time.
Each seminar in the series features a mock interview or hearing, broken down into smaller segments, where experienced AILA practitioners play the roles of client, interviewer, judge and attorney at various stages of the proceedings. After each interview or hearing segment, the panelists issue-spot, dissect what went wrong or right and recommend how best to prepare your clients for the process. This three-part seminar series is designed for newer immigration practitioners and more experienced practitioners who are looking to expand into new areas of immigration law.
This seminar features a mock USCIS interview for a marriage-based adjustment case and panel discussion of the following topics:

Nancy Alaine Peterson is a solo practitioner in St Paul, MN. She has practiced immigration law for the past 22 years. She represents persons in removal defense cases, including appeals, family-based immigration, naturalization, petitions under VAWA, U visas, and asylum. Ms. Peterson has presented at several immigration law seminars over the past 14 years. She is involved as a mentor attorney at Advocates for Human Rights and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2007. She is admitted to practice law in Minnesota, the U.S. District Court of Minnesota, and the Federal Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. She is fluent in Spanish.
Joseph S. Porta, Los Angeles, CA
Joseph S. Porta is admitted to practice before the California Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth, Fifth and Ninth Circuits. He has been in private practice in Los Angeles since 2000, and is the immediate past chair for the AILA Southern California Chapter. His practice focuses on deportation defense and federal appeals although his practice covers all aspects of immigration law. He is a graduate of Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and the University of California at Irvine.
Jacqueline L. Watson, Austin, TX
Jacqueline L. Watson is a native of El Paso and undergraduate alum of the University of Texas at El Paso. She earned her J.D. at the University of Texas School of Law. After years as a public interest attorney, she joined the firm of Hines & Leigh in 2004, during which time she became Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law. Jacqueline is now an associate with the Law Office of Thomas Esparza, Jr. in Austin, Texas.
