Suing the Racketeers: Using RICO to Protect Our Clients [Web Seminar]

RICO is not just a law that criminalizes the acts of those involved in an ongoing criminal organization. It can also be used to bring civil actions against them. This seminar will provide a rich overview of the RICO Act with guidance on how it can be used against those who hurt immigration clients, i.e., notarios, traffickers, abusive employers.

Marlene A. Dougherty, Brownsville, TX
Marlene A. Dougherty practices in Brownsville, TX. Her focus is chiefly on victim and family immigration. She is admitted to practice before the Connecticut Bar; U.S. District Courts for Connecticut and the Southern District of Texas; the U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits; and the U.S. Supreme Court. She just finished serving her fourth term on AILA’s Consumer Protection and Authorized Practice of Law Committee.


Margaret H. McCormick, AILA Past President, Chicago, IL
Margaret H. (Peggy) McCormick, principal of Minsky, McCormick & Hallagan, was national president of AILA (1997-98) and the AIC (1999-2003). An adjunct professor at Loyola Law School, she teaches worksite enforcement & immigration and a class on immigration law. She is second vice president of the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. She is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, and International Who’s Who of Corporate Immigration Lawyers.


Jeffrey E. Grell, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Jeffrey E. Grell is the managing partner of the law firm of Grell & Feist LLC. The firm practices primarily in the areas of immigration law, commercial litigation, and racketeering. Since 1999, Mr. Grell has been an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School, where he teaches a course on the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Mr. Grell is also the author and publisher of Grell on RICO and the website, ricoact.com.
